Crazy Things Scientists Have Discovered Trapped Under Ice

Woolly Rhino

We’ve all heard of woolly mammoths, but the woolly rhinoceros is also a real animal that was around tens of thousands of years ago. Just as they have with mammoths, scientists have found mummified versions of the woolly rhino in ice. We’ve also found cave drawings of them as further proof that they exist. DNA tests also confirm that this species is a distant relative of today’s Sumatran rhino. One woolly rhino specimen discovered by scientists was so well intact (outside of a few places other animals took a bite) that most of its fur still in place. When you think about the fact that this species went extinct around 10,000 years ago, it’s amazing to find any specimen that still looks like it did when it was alive.

Copper Arrowhead

These copper arrowheads that scientists found in a patch of ice may look simple enough, but they tell us a lot about past civilizations and cultures. For instance, these arrowheads are akin to the fishhooks we use today, meaning a rather advanced society designed them to improve their hunting capabilities. The folks who made this weren’t going hunting on a wing and a prayer. They knew what they were doing and they knew how to get results. Finding this arrowhead in the ice is proof that we may have underestimated many of the ancient societies that came before us.

Fox

For the record, not every animal found frozen in ice comes from prehistoric times. For example, a hunter stumbled across this fox near a lake in Germany. Even modern-day animals can face harsh and bitter winter conditions that lead to them suffocating or freezing to death and surrounded by ice, waiting for someone to stumble upon them. Obviously, we feel bad for this fox that was just trying to survive the winter. However, in death, he will serve as a warning to others about the danger of cold winter nights, as the fox will be displayed in a German hotel.
