Gyms are a regular part of many people’s routines, and like any public activity, they offer many opportunities for rudeness.
Thomas P. Farley, an etiquette expert, said, “Because a gym is a shared space, one where adrenaline is in ample supply, members must be particularly mindful of how their behavior can adversely affect the experiences of others.”
Many people don’t consider the consequences of their actions in shared spaces like a gym. Identifying the gym faux pas Farley and other etiquette experts see people committing is key to improving the gym experience.
Leaving Equipment Unwiped
Before moving on to the next machine, wipe the equipment after sweating all over it. April Masini, an etiquette expert, said, “Nobody wants to sit in your sweat. So grab a towel or wipe to clean it.”
There’s a polite way to confront someone who doesn’t comply.
Refusing To Return Weights
Don’t forget to put away the free weights after you use them. In addition to being rude, leaving them on the floor poses a safety hazard.
Smith said, “This is a kindergarten skill. Once you’re playing with your toys, put them away.”
Loudly Playing Your Music
When working out, it’s common to listen to music, but make sure you wear earbuds. Smith said, “Some people have their music playing so loudly that others nearby can hear it ― which is annoying to those people and also really bad for your ears.”
Laughing At Other People’s Workouts
Masini noted, “It’s disheartening when people are mean-spirited and stare or laugh at people who are somewhat out of shape.” It is more common to embarrass, insecure, and discourage inexperienced gymgoers from returning.
Staring At Other People
Gymgoers need to respect each other’s personal space, whether in the locker room, a fitness class, or a gym floor.
Smith said, “No creepy staring. Human beings are notoriously accurate at being able to tell when someone is staring at them, even from behind.”
