She Runs After Her
“Sorry, Lucy,” Maria muttered apologetically to her client, maneuvering through the bustling salon and onto the sidewalk. “Hey!” she called out, spotting the girl on the verge of disappearing around a corner. “Wait up!”
The girl halted her body tense with fear, lips quivering as she avoided Maria’s gaze. “Please, just come back,” Maria urged gently, her expression softening with concern. She couldn’t let her walk away like this, not when something was troubling her.
Maria’s heart raced as she waited for the girl’s response, hoping she’d come back so they could talk, so Maria could offer whatever support she needed.
Offering Help
“So, what’s your name?” Maria inquired gently as the girl timidly returned. With a mumbled response, the girl shared her name, and Maria reciprocated with hers. “Wanna come in?” Maria offered, a hopeful smile playing on her lips. “We’ve got milkshakes and some pretty epic stories.”
With a hesitant nod, the girl followed Maria into the salon, though her unease was still palpable. Maria guided her through the bustling space, navigating past chairs, clients, and busy stylists. As the girl finally lowered her hood, Maria instantly understood the reason for her earlier flight.
A Heartbreaking Request
“Cut it all,” the girl stated firmly as Maria surveyed her tangled hair, a mess of knots and unkempt strands. Maria felt a pang of empathy as she realized the extent of the task ahead, knowing her day was about to take a detour.
“Why do you want it all cut?” Maria inquired gently, already mentally preparing to cancel any other appointments for the day.
“Because it’s worthless,” the girl replied, her voice thick with emotion. Tears glistened in her eyes as she continued, “I’m worthless. Please, just cut it all.”
Maria’s heart ached at the girl’s words, understanding that this wasn’t just about hair. She silently vowed to give her the care and attention she needed beyond just a haircut.
