Shopping for groceries may be a mundane errand, but that doesn’t mean you should behave rudely. Even when grocery shopping, there is basic etiquette. Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting president Jodi R.R. Smith said shopping in the grocery store could be a full-contact sport during busy times.

have too Many items At The Express Line

According to Diane Gottsman, author of “Modern Etiquette for a Better Life” and founder of The Protocol School of Texas, respect the express line limit. There’s no excuse for taking shortcuts at the grocery store, no matter how busy you are.

Don’t think ‘ten items or fewer’ does not apply to you,” said Nick Leighton, etiquette expert and host of the “were you raised by wolves?” Podcast. “It does!”

Ignoring Aisle Traffic Rules

It’s probably not a good idea to do it with your shopping cart in a supermarket if you wouldn’t do it on the sidewalk or highway. Avoid blocking other people, changing directions suddenly, or crossing multiple lanes without checking for oncoming traffic.”

Navigate each aisle and make your selections keeping the “rules of the road” in mind. Be careful not to collide with carts. There is two-way traffic in most aisles, Smith said. To keep traffic moving, keep to the right. Let others pass if you see someone and want to catch up.”
