Consider Your Individual Cat’s Needs

Cat behaviorist and owner of the Cat Behavior Clinic, Mieshelle Nagelschneider, said young kittens and older cats are especially susceptible to heat stroke. Heat stroke is more likely to occur in overweight cats and breeds with shorter faces.

A flat-faced cat is brachycephalic, which means its skull bones are shorter. Cats such as Persians, Himalayans, and Burmese tend to have breathing issues and don’t pant as effectively, so keep them inside during hot weather.

Don’t Forget About Sunscreen

Dr. LaCheryl Ball, a veterinarian with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said the skin on pets’ noses, ears, and exposed areas could also get sunburned. Avoid applying sunscreen formulated for humans to pets, especially hairless cats.

Annie Valuska, a senior pet behavior scientist at Purina, recommended checking with your vet about cat-safe sunscreen for noses and ears. Flea, tick, and worm preventatives (such as sprays, drops, and oral medications) were also recommended by Ball. When applying products to your pet, always read the labels.
