Bringing a houseplant into your home is always a nice thing, but if you are a pet owner, getting plants into your house could have life-threatening effects on your pet.

So, knowing the difference between a highly toxic plant or flower and one that is safe for your pets is crucial.

There is a need for every pet owner to be cautious about what their pet may try to eat when they are alone. Despite your best efforts to keep your plants and pets separate, pets may be curious about the plant on the mantle and mistake it for a toy or snack (after all, they are small agents of chaos).

Lilies

Be aware that there are a variety of types of lilies that are toxic to cats, such as tiger lilies.

Most cat owners who end up calling the helpline do so because of lilies.

However, not all lilies have the same effect on pets as others do. Vets explain that chewing on lilies can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain in dogs, but there are some lilies which is hazardous to cats as well.

If ingested by cats, it can cause acute poisoning and irregular heartbeats. This plant should be avoided by cat owners.

Castor Bean Plant

It’s dangerous for dogs and cats to eat the dried beans from this tropical decorative plant which grows in backyards throughout the U.S., as it can cause liver failure and kidney failure.

Castor bean is not so much known for its flowers but rather for the seeds it produces.

There are several signs of castor bean poisoning, including weakness, colic, trembling, sweating, and lack of coordination, difficulty breathing, and progressive central nervous system depression.
