The Healthy Canned Soup Brands Nutritionists Swear By

Cold weather makes everyone want soup, but not everyone can make it. From canned soup to Tetra Paks to frozen soup options, you’ll find plenty of soup options at the grocery store. In terms of sodium levels, canned soups aren’t the best.

In anticipation of chilly days, nutritionists share how they feel about soup and what they look for when stocking up. Soup is a favorite among food experts. RD Amanda Frankeny said, “good soup makes everything perfect.” She doesn’t mind packaged soups. “It’s definitely a timesaver,” Frankeny said.

Registered dietitian Vanessa Rissetto says many people miss meals due to work distractions. When it’s busy, packaged soup can help. If you time it right, soup can help stabilize your blood sugar and reduce the burden of preparation.

Amy Gorin, a registered dietician, nutritionist, and inclusive plant-based dietitian, said that in a pinch, soup is the best option. It has all the nutrition you need in one dish and hydrates. A good winter soup can make all the difference.

Jerlyn Jones, a registered dietician and nutritionist, said soup is comforting during winter. “Soups can include a variety of healthy ingredients, including vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber, and antioxidants,” she noted.

The AHA recommends limiting sodium intake to 2,300 milligrams per day. High-sodium diets can increase the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. So the best thing for you to do is look for low-sodium soups. Ideally, look for words like “no-salt-added” and “low-sodium.” Your best bets are hearty broth-based soups with colorful vegetables, whole grains, and beans.

Finally, make sure it’s filling. Check the nutritional values and ensure that it contains ample protein and fiber. Add your favorite toppings to the soup for flavor. Here are the nutritionists’ top choices:
