Does It Matter If You Stand Up Straight Or Slouch?

Our parents teach us to stand straight from a very young age. Probably everyone remembers walking around with a book on their heads to improve posture. What’s the point? How is a good posture beneficial to our health?

There are some science-backed advantages to adopting this posture – we’re taught to emulate models with perfect posture. There are probably fewer benefits to posture reminders and school posture checks than you think. Find out if posture benefits your health or is just BS here.

First, What Is Good Posture?

It is considered proper posture to have your head above your pelvis and feet. There is no one-size-fits-all posture. Some people, especially older people, find slumping over more comfortable due to conditions such as arthritis of the spine. It may not be possible for one person to maintain a good posture.

Is Standing Up Straight Good for Health?

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine’s minimally-invasive spine surgery chief, Dr Amit Jain, good posture reduces wear and tear on the spine. A minimal amount of evidence is available to support the association between posture and either reducing current pain or preventing future pain.

Exercises that strengthen your back are more important than throwing your shoulders back to achieve a straight spine.

Should I Not Care About ‘Good Posture’?

Strengthening specific muscle groups may be more beneficial than constantly reminding yourself to stand up straight. Paraspinal muscles and your core are two muscle groups that can help you maintain good posture. Yoga, Pilates, and strength exercises can all strengthen these muscle groups.

Having Good Posture Isn’t A Cure-All

Incorporating different movements into your day is more important than simply standing or sitting up straight. An eight-hour day spent in a static position isn’t ideal. Taking frequent breaks from sitting at work or setting up a standing desk at home will help your health.
