Does Shaving Make Your Hair Grow Back Faster? Experts Unpack 3 Popular Myths.

Sometimes you wonder if your hair removal tactics are effective or if they are even making things worse. Hair removal has been around since about 3000 B.C. So this hassle has been around for quite some time. Here are some expert tips on shaving, waxing, and other methods.

Hair Grow Back Darker And Thicker

Not true. You can see why that makes sense. JTAV Clinical Skincare founder Joie Tavernise said, “If this were true, we’d shave every balding man’s head to restore his hair.” The myth needs debunking, says dermatologist Michael Jacobs.

Shaving only trims the hair, so it doesn’t affect the roots. Darkness and thickness are genetic. Similarly, Rebecca Marcus, MD, affirms shaving doesn’t affect the quality of the hair since it occurs directly at the skin’s surface, not at the hair follicle, where it grows.

Your Hair Grows Back Faster With Shaving

It’s kind of true. Waxing removes the entire follicle from the root, so it takes a while for hair to reach the surface when it starts growing back. Regrowth begins at the surface of your skin with shaving. “Shaving results last two to seven days,” Jacobs said. Generally, waxing lasts between three and six weeks.

Shaving Creates Ingrown Hairs

There is a “yes, but” here. Jacobs believes ingrown hairs can be prevented if you’re committed to shaving. Chemical exfoliators can remove dead skin cells and buildup on the skin before shaving, which prevents ingrown hairs. Itching, razor burn, redness, and ingrown hairs can also be reduced by applying shaving cream or shave gel before and after shaving.”
