New Heart-Health Study Gives Reason To Drink Multiple Cups Of Coffee Per Day

It may be time to increase your caffeine intake if you’re a one-coffee-per-day drinker. Drinking multiple cups of coffee daily may improve heart health and prevent death, according to a new study.

An approximately 12.5-year study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology examined the effects of coffee on the health of 449,563 adults without a history of cardiovascular diseases.

There were five groups of study participants — those who drank no coffee per day, less than one cup, one cup, two to three cups, four to five cups, and more than five cups per day. The researchers gathered information through a questionnaire that included a question about the type of coffee they drink – instant, ground, or decaffeinated.

A comparison was made between those who drank coffee and those who didn’t.  In general, coffee reduces the risk of death and improves heart health:

  • A cup of coffee a day proved beneficial to our health across the board.
  • Compared to people who did not drink coffee, those who drank two to three cups of instant, ground or decaf coffee had a lower death rate.
  • 27% less risk was associated with ground coffee.
  • Congestive heart failure and stroke decrease negative cardiovascular events associated with certain types of coffee.
  • Lastly, irregular heartbeats or arrhythmias were measured.
