Baseball fans mark your calendars for August 13th, 2020—for it will be on this day that your dreams will come true. The New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox organizations have announced that they will be facing off on the Field of Dreams. Located in Dyersville, Iowa, the location was brought to light and then made famous by the Kevin Costner film of the same name.
To accommodate those fans who plan to attend the memorial event, an 8,000 seat ballpark is in the works to be temporarily built on the same site as the ballfield in the 1989 movie. The event will mark the first major league game ever to be played in the state of Iowa to date.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred stated:
“As a sport that is proud of its history linking generations, Major League Baseball is excited to bring a regular-season game to the site of Field of Dream.”
He went on to say that the MLB looked forward to celebrating the movie that inspired it all and to observe how baseball brings people of all walks of like together in Iowa’s special cornfield.
Construction on the temporary ballpark began precisely one year before the game is to be played. Although the exact dimensions of the temporary field have yet to be announced, the MLB did present a rendering of the intended setup. There appeared to be a pathway through the cornfield for the fans, as well as aspects that were a nod to Cominsky Park, former home of the White Sox.
The game, which is slated to air on Fox, will officially be considered a home date for the White Sox. The day after will be a travel day for both teams, after which they will continue their three-game series in the windy city of Chicago.
