Late October definitely qualifies as the spooky season for most people. But you don’t have to wait until fall to visit haunted houses or exchange pleasantries with ghosts. The world is filled with cities that are said to be haunted by paranormal creatures. The good news is that these cities are great places to visit outside of the scary secrets each one holds. The next time you want to plan a fun trip and perhaps do a little ghost hunting along the way, consider these three haunted destinations.
On the surface, Prague is one of the most beautiful and charming cities in Eastern Europe. But lurking beneath the surface is an old city with a lot of scary secrets. Spend a few days in the city and you’re bound to hear some of the terrifying stories that have happened there centuries ago and learn about the ghosts that allegedly haunt some of Prague’s most historic buildings. Prague even has a legend about a headless horseman, or as they call them, a Templar Knight.
Italy’s Poveglia Island seems like a secluded vacation spot, but that’s not the case at all. During the plague, the island was used as a quarantine for the sick. It was later used as an asylum for those with mental health issues. In case you’re new at this, that’s a recipe for some paranormal activity. Today, the island is abandoned because of all the reports of ghosts and paranormal events. Technically, you can’t access the island, but if you’re visiting Venice or Lido di Venezia, you may be able to steal a glance of Poveglia or sneak your way onto the haunted island. Just don’t stay too long.
Edinburgh is more than just a charming Scottish city, it’s also one of the most haunted places in Europe. The city includes a series of underground vaults where visitors can take ghost tours and perhaps meet the spirits that haunt Edinburgh’s underworld. Back above ground, the Edinburgh Castle is one of many noteworthy places said to be home to unexplained noises and ghostly activity. Even some of the pubs in Edinburgh have long reported paranormal activity. Wherever you go in the city, you’re bound to sense something haunted.
