If you plan a wedding, you always have to be on the lookout for wedding crashers. But if you host a wedding in the Bay Area, one of those wedding crashers may just be the greatest wide receiver in NFL history.
Long time San Francisco 49ers receiver Jerry Rice has confessed to an SB Nation affiliate that he regularly crashes weddings, usually at least one per weekend. Of all the things retired pro athletes do with their time, this actually isn’t a bad idea.
“I just want to go up to the bride and the groom and congratulate them,” shares Rice. “Tell them, ‘Today is your day.'”
Of course, when you’re Jerry Rice, it’s hard to go anywhere and remain innocuous, especially in northern California. The NFL’s all-time leader in receptions and receiving touchdowns tends to get recognized quickly, and to a certain extent, steals the show.
“For some reason, it always turns out that they are so excited,” explains Rice. “They want to take pictures, and I’m just happy to take pictures with them. It always turns out to be bigger than that.”
With the attention that he brings, Rice says he tries not to stay too long so the focus can remain on the bride and groom. However, he acknowledges that if there’s music playing, it’s hard to resist hitting the dance floor for a little while. After all, he is a former contestant on Dancing with the Stars.
“I don’t mind getting out there and cutting a rug and having fun. It’s my nature,” says Rice. “I love people, and I want everything to be natural. I want to give people a memory.”
