If you patronized the VIP Spa in Albuquerque, New Mexico, between May and September of 2018, the New Mexico Department of Health is encouraging you to get tested for HIV. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) can be deadly if left unchecked.
The New Mexico state health officials announced in a statement that two individuals who received facial injections from the VIP Spa have, according to recent laboratory test, reportedly been infected with the same strain of HIV. Because of the similarity in properties of the virus, indicates that the strain of the infection came from the same source.
The health officials issued a news release Monday that two individuals who were confirmed to have been clients of the VIP Spa, having had what is termed “vampire facials” just last year, were recently confirmed to have been infected with a strain of HIV that is identical. The individuals were customers of the spa between May and September of 2018.
The “vampire facials” were provided quite regularly at the spa. This is where the customer’s own blood is taken from the customer and then injected into the face. This is done to replenish the skin.
The New Mexico health department is offering free testing for not only the HIV strain but for Hepatitis B and C as well. Testing is free and kept confidential. The health officials stated that more than 100 people have already come forward to be tested for the HIV virus, along with hepatitis B and C.
The department of health is making sure to reach out to all the former clients of the spa, providing the testing as well as counseling services, for anyone who may have had an injection based service done.
The spa was closed in September 2018, of last year, after an inspection determined that unsafe practices were being followed that as a result could facilitate the spread of various infections, such as HIV, to their customers.
